OceanArc Technologies (formerly The Ocean’s Friend Aquaculture) was founded in June 2015 when CEO, Ashtyn Reed Chen, was just a fresh biochemical engineering grad from the University of Southern California. Unsatisfied with just working in the chemicals industry and with a real passion about producing sustainable food to combat Earth’s growing population and climate change, he started this aquaculture farm part-time with his family in Ohio to fulfill his love of marine biology and saltwater shrimp. Having fresh saltwater shrimp in central Ohio caught on rather quickly and production expanded along with crawfish, fish and aquaponic veggies production. As of October 2022, the farm (out of 4 facilities in Ohio) produces almost 2500 lbs of saltwater shrimp a month for wholesale and retail accounts, in addition to getting involved in seafood distribution and processing. Ashtyn, with his family background in the restaurant industry, has taken another step of becoming an investor/partner several restaurant groups and supermarkets across the Midwest to more easily distribute his farm products along with those of other fellow farmers. He is focused on shortening the food supply chain, specifically for seafood, across the US to allow as many fellow Americans access to truly fresh domestic food (cooked or raw) with the least miles traveled.
